Scientists announced a new, giant marine reptile that was discovered in Nevada. Named Thalattoarchon, it is an early member of the ichthyosaur family. The fossil, found in central Nevada, is about 244 million years old. These were a family of air-breathing reptiles that inhabited seas and oceans all over the world during the Mesozoic period. Thalattoarchon lived in Nevada at a time when dinosaurs were just beginning to appear, millions of years before the land-dwelling giants dominated the dry parts of the planet. Its name means "lizard eating ruler of the sea" and it was about 30 feet (9 meters) long, with a large head and over 100 sharp teeth. Since Nevada was covered with water for most of the age of the dinosaurs, our state fossil is the ichthyosaur.
